Breadcrumbs

Breadcrumbs appear as a series of hyperlinks, usually at the top of a web page, that provide a trail of links to the user’s current location. For example, if a user is on a product page in an online store, they might see breadcrumbs such as “Home > Clothing > Women’s Clothing > Dresses". This would indicate that the user is currently in the “Dresses” section of the store, and the breadcrumbs provide links to the “Home” page, the “Clothing” section", and the “Women’s Clothing” section.

Breadcrumbs are also useful for search engine optimization, as they provide a clear indication of the page’s location in the website hierarchy. This can help search engines understand the page’s relevance to a particular search query and increase the page’s ranking in search results.

Types of Breadcrumbs

There are several types of breadcrumbs that can be used on a website.

• Hierarchical breadcrumbs: These breadcrumbs present the page’s location in the website hierarchy, similar to the example given above.

• Attribute Breadcrumbs: Attribute breadcrumbs provide additional information about the page, such as product category or brand.

• Path Breadcrumbs: Path breadcrumbs provide a list of the pages the user has visited in their current session.

• Search Breadcrumbs: Search breadcrumbs provide the user with the search query they used to find the page.

Usability Considerations

When designing breadcrumbs for a website, it’s important to consider usability. Breadcrumbs should be easy to understand and clearly indicate the page’s location in the website hierarchy. Additionally, breadcrumbs should be placed near the top of the page and prominently displayed to ensure that users can see them.
