Run rigorous A/B tests and personalize every visit on Shopify or any storefront β no engineers required.
Shopify Plus is a managed, hosted enterprise platform built for speed-to-market and low operational overhead β ideal for high-growth D2C brands that want to scale without building a dedicated platform engineering team. Magento (now Adobe Commerce) is a self-hosted, highly customisable enterprise platform with deep B2B and B2C capabilities, suited to complex catalogue structures, multi-brand architectures, and organisations willing to invest in development and infrastructure. The right choice depends on your technical capability and complexity needs: Shopify Plus is faster and cheaper to operate; Magento offers more control but at significantly higher total cost of ownership.
Shopify Plus is the enterprise tier of the Shopify platform, designed for brands processing over $1 million/year in revenue. It adds unlimited staff accounts, customisable checkout (checkout extensibility), automation workflows (Shopify Flow), multi-store management (Organisation Admin), dedicated support, and API rate-limit increases over standard Shopify plans. Pricing starts at $2,500/month (around βΉ2,00,000/month) or 0.25% of monthly revenue β whichever is higher β up to a cap.
Magento, now Adobe Commerce, is an open-source ecommerce platform acquired by Adobe in 2018. It exists in two versions: Magento Open Source (free, self-hosted) and Adobe Commerce (paid, with cloud hosting options). Adobe Commerce starts around $22,000/year for smaller businesses and scales significantly for enterprise β total cost of ownership including hosting, development, and support typically runs $100,000β$500,000+/year for large operations. In India, Magento has a significant installed base among mid-to-large D2C and B2B sellers.

Shopify Plus annual TCO estimate (Indian enterprise D2C):
Magento / Adobe Commerce annual TCO estimate:
For most Indian D2C enterprise brands, Shopify Plus's total cost is lower than Magento's when developer and infrastructure costs are fully accounted for. Magento's higher TCO is justified when its unique capabilities (B2B pricing, complex catalogue rules, deep backend customisation) are genuinely needed.
Magento is open source at its core β you can modify any part of the platform, from the product catalogue data model to the checkout payment flow to the order management system. This is genuinely valuable for brands with unusual requirements: complex multi-tier pricing, custom shipping rules, bespoke product configurators, or deeply integrated ERP systems.
Shopify Plus is moving toward more flexibility via its Checkout Extensibility framework and its Hydrogen/Oxygen headless stack. However, some things remain constrained β the core checkout logic, the order management backend, and certain API rate limits are still platform-controlled. For the vast majority of D2C use cases, this isn't a problem. For highly custom enterprise requirements, it can be.
Shopify's infrastructure is managed entirely by Shopify. Their global CDN handles peak traffic β Shopify claims to handle millions of requests per minute during peak events like Black Friday. Indian D2C brands running Diwali or Independence Day sales don't need to provision extra servers or worry about their store going down under load.
Magento performance is the operator's responsibility. A poorly optimised Magento store on inadequate hosting will slow down or crash under peak load β and this has happened to Indian brands during high-GMV sales events. Proper Magento infrastructure for enterprise traffic requires dedicated servers, Redis caching, Elasticsearch, Varnish, and ongoing performance tuning. This is manageable with a skilled DevOps team; it's a significant risk without one.
Regardless of platform, every enterprise ecommerce brand needs to continuously test and optimise its storefront. Platform choice determines your infrastructure; A/B testing determines how well your store converts the traffic that hits it.
Enterprise brands on Shopify Plus can use CustomFit.ai's visual editor to run experiments on product pages, collection pages, and checkout steps without developer involvement. The same applies to Magento stores via CustomFit.ai's JavaScript snippet. Testing personalised product recommendations, trust signal placement, checkout step reduction, or promotional banner variants can drive 10β25% conversion improvements that compound over time.
If you're evaluating Shopify Plus or Magento for your enterprise stack, you'll also want to plan your A/B testing and CRO programme from day one. CustomFit.ai works alongside either platform and lets your marketing team run no-code experiments independently of your engineering team. Start a 14-day free trial.
Can I migrate from Magento to Shopify Plus? Yes. Adobe Commerce to Shopify Plus migrations are common and well-supported by both Shopify's partner ecosystem and specialist migration agencies in India.
Is Shopify Plus available in India with local pricing? Yes. Shopify Plus pricing for Indian merchants is available in INR, and Shopify has a local support and partner ecosystem in India.
Which platform handles high traffic better? Shopify Plus handles traffic spikes automatically β no action required. Magento requires pre-scaling infrastructure for peak events. For Diwali sales or IPL-scale traffic spikes, Shopify Plus is lower risk.
Does Magento support Indian payment gateways? Yes. Razorpay, PayU, CCAvenue, Cashfree, and most other Indian payment gateways have Magento extensions available.
What is Adobe Commerce Cloud? Adobe Commerce Cloud is the managed hosting version of Magento (Adobe Commerce), which adds cloud hosting and some managed services. It reduces but does not eliminate the operational burden compared to self-hosted Magento.
