Shopify metafields are custom data fields that store product-specific information beyond Shopify's default fields โ ingredients, certifications, skin type compatibility, how-to steps, size guides, and more. When connected to your theme using Shopify's native tools, they turn product pages into conversion assets by answering the specific questions shoppers have before buying. Most D2C brands underuse them, leaving significant conversion lift on the table.
A Shopify product has a set of default fields: title, description, price, vendor, type, tags, images, and variants. That's it. But a D2C beauty product also needs: ingredient list, key benefits, how to use, skin type suitability, certifications, and product warnings. A D2C food product needs: nutritional information, allergen list, FSSAI number, shelf life, storage instructions.
Without metafields, you'd add all of this to the product description as unstructured text โ buried in a paragraph that shoppers skim and miss. With metafields, you store each piece of information as structured data and display it in specific, designed sections of your product page.
Metafields are:
Metafields are not:
The problem: Ingredient-conscious shoppers want full ingredient lists before buying. Buried in a long description, ingredients get missed. No ingredients shown = trust gap = no sale.
The solution: Create a product.metafields.custom.ingredients metafield of type "multi-line text" or "rich text." Populate it with the full INCI ingredient list. Connect it to a dedicated "Ingredients" tab or accordion section on your product page.
CRO impact: Beauty brands that add dedicated ingredient sections to product pages see 10โ18% improvement in add-to-cart rate for ingredient-conscious shoppers. The section signals transparency.
The problem: "Key benefits" written as a paragraph in the description is harder to scan than a bulleted list with icons. Shoppers make quick decisions; structured scannable benefits outperform prose.
The solution: Create a product.metafields.custom.key_benefits metafield as a list of text. Connect it to a benefits section with icons (checkmarks, relevant icons) above the fold on the product page.
CRO impact: Scannable benefit lists above the product description improve time-on-page for informed visitors and increase add-to-cart for visitors with specific benefit requirements.
The problem: "Is this right for my oily, acne-prone skin?" If a visitor can't answer this quickly, they don't buy.
The solution: Create a metafield like product.metafields.custom.skin_type as a list (oily, dry, combination, sensitive, all skin types). Display it as a visual indicator near the product title.
CRO impact: Explicit skin type compatibility labelling reduces purchase hesitation and reduces returns (customers who buy products suited for them are more satisfied and less likely to return).
The problem: FSSAI numbers, vegan certifications, cruelty-free logos, and organic certifications scattered in product descriptions don't create the visual trust impact of designed badge displays.
The solution: Create metafields for each certification type (certified_vegan, cruelty_free, fssai_licence, dermatologist_tested). Connect them to a certification badges section on the product page that displays visual icons conditionally โ only if the metafield is set.
CRO impact: Certification badge sections near the add-to-cart button reduce purchase hesitation, particularly for first-time buyers of health and beauty products. Indian consumers specifically respond to FSSAI and dermatologist-tested claims.
The problem: "How to use" instructions in prose are hard to follow. Shoppers want clear, numbered steps. But adding numbered steps for every product in the description creates formatting inconsistency.
The solution: Create a product.metafields.custom.how_to_use metafield as a list of steps. Display it as a numbered steps section with optional icons.
CRO impact: Clear usage instructions reduce pre-purchase uncertainty ("I don't know if I can actually use this") and reduce post-purchase returns (customers who use products correctly are more satisfied).
The problem: Size guides stored as static pages are hard to access from product pages. A customer who can't find their size guide abandons the purchase.
The solution: Create a product.metafields.custom.size_guide metafield as a URL reference pointing to the relevant size guide page. Display it as a clickable link or modal trigger on the product page near the size selector.
CRO impact: Easy-access size guides directly reduce size-related purchase hesitation โ one of the highest abandonment causes in fashion D2C.
The problem: Health supplement and beauty brands have legal obligations to display warnings (allergens, pregnancy contraindications, drug interactions). Buried in descriptions, these can be missed โ creating both legal exposure and post-purchase dissatisfaction.
The solution: Create a structured warnings metafield. Display it in a clearly designed warning section on the product page.
CRO impact: Transparent warning displays build trust with informed buyers. Counterintuitively, prominent warning sections often increase conversion for the right audience โ shoppers who read warnings and find they're suitable feel more confident buying.
Navigate to: Shopify Admin โ Settings โ Custom Data โ Products โ Add Definition
For each metafield you want to create:
custom.key_benefits)Once definitions are created, navigate to any product. You'll see your custom metafields listed below the standard fields. Fill them in.
For bulk data entry (populating metafields across hundreds of products), use Shopify's CSV import or a metafield bulk editor app.
Navigate to: Online Store โ Customize (Theme Editor) โ Product Page
Add a new section or block where you want the metafield data to appear. When setting the content source for a text block, select "Product data" โ your metafield. The metafield value will now render dynamically for each product.
Configure sections to only display when the metafield is populated. An ingredients section should not render on products without ingredient data. Shopify's theme editor supports this with "Hide when empty" settings.
Metafields and personalisation work together. You can use CustomFit.ai to personalise which metafield sections are highlighted based on visitor segment:
Be consistent with naming conventions. Use a consistent namespace (custom.) and snake_case key names across all your metafield definitions. Inconsistency creates headaches when building theme sections.
Populate metafields for all products, not just new ones. Retrofitting metafields across 200 existing products is tedious โ schedule a data entry sprint. The conversion impact across your catalogue justifies the effort.
Test section placement on mobile. On mobile, product pages scroll long. Test whether certification badges above the fold or below the fold convert better. Metafield sections are easy to reorder in the theme editor โ take advantage of this.
Use list metafields for benefits, not rich text. A list metafield renders as a consistent bulleted list in your theme. Rich text gives you too much flexibility โ you'll end up with inconsistent formatting across products.
