Start free trial →A soft conversion is a meaningful visitor action that does not directly generate revenue but demonstrates intent, captures lead information, or deepens engagement with your brand. Common soft conversions include newsletter sign-ups, account registrations, content downloads (lookbooks, guides), wishlist saves, and free trial sign-ups. They are the ecommerce equivalent of raising your hand — the visitor is interested, but not yet ready to buy.
Soft Conversion Rate = (Number of Soft Conversion Actions ÷ Total Sessions or Visitors) × 100
If 2,400 of 30,000 monthly visitors sign up for your newsletter, your soft conversion rate for that action is 8%.
Soft conversions let you build a relationship with visitors who are not yet purchase-ready. In the Indian D2C context, where category education is often needed (skincare ingredients, nutritional supplements, premium personal care), capturing a soft conversion means you can continue the conversation via email or WhatsApp remarketing. For Shopify stores, a well-segmented email list of engaged subscribers — each representing a soft conversion — often returns ₹40–₹80 per email sent, making it one of the most cost-effective revenue channels over time. Soft conversions also pad your funnel with enough data to run meaningful A/B tests even on lower-traffic pages.
Pilgrim, the Indian clean beauty brand, uses a "skin quiz" on their website as a soft conversion mechanism. Visitors who complete the quiz receive a personalised product recommendation and are simultaneously added to a segmented email list. The quiz completion is tracked as a soft conversion. Pilgrim can then measure what percentage of quiz completers (soft converters) go on to purchase within 30 days — connecting the soft and hard conversion journey directly.
Testing soft conversion CTAs — copy, placement, incentive type — is often faster and more statistically tractable than testing for purchase, because soft conversions happen more frequently. Insights from these tests often reveal what messaging resonates, which can then be applied to hard conversion pages.
